Aha Moment

So, I got my latest issue of Woman's World in the mail yesterday and was disappointed to see someone else's story in it. I thought for sure this would be the issue.

Then I realized and remembered that my story centered around the Chinese horoscope and Chinese New Year isn't until February 10. So I'm absolutely certain that they'll print my story in the issue that has their annual Chinese Horoscope spread. LOL

Hi~ Noticed there was a lot of discussion under your entry "A Welcome Sight" re pub dates. I think the date in a letter of acceptance is the date the issue is expected to hit the stands and the pub date is later, and always a Monday.

Lately (since about mid-December?) the day the new issue is for sale is earlier than it was. It used to be that a Monday issue was on the stands on the previous Thursday; recently the new issues have been available more than a week ahead of the pub date.

My recent (and first) acceptance letter stated Jan 10, so I thought it would be in the Jan 14 issue, but it's in Jan 21 (Waiting for Marcy), and I was first able to buy it yesterday, Jan 12 - not that I have been checking every day!

Cheers! Carolyn Martin

Kate,I have been looking forward to this story since you first mentioned it in your blog quite some time ago. Isn't the issue number stated on the contract usually accurate? Maybe not. I believe Tamara said her Valentine story was numbered as 6 and that is the February 11th issue, according to the 2013 Issue Dates listing.

Wouldn't it be fine if WW published several stories in one issue? After all, they have tons of articles about angels. Nice, of course, but are they really of interest to the readers?

They must be. :) What I wish they'd do is get rid of, or move, the affirmation on the romance page and let us write longer stories again.

Kate, as I have said several times before, it would help if they would put that puzzle solution over on the puzzle page where it belongs. That would give us about fifty words more. Maybe I should fire Stephanie and take over her job.

I like the idea of longer stories too. As a writer, it would be so much easier to write, as a reader it would be more fun and a way to get to know the characters better. Also, from a writing standpoint it would definitely allow more room for building the romance between the characters. Also, like the idea of moving the puzzle solution over onto the puzzle page. Would make more sense, and give the romance section more room. I know this would never happen, but wish they would include two stories per issue. Wouldn't that be fun!

Kste, thanks for the feedback about printing on one side of the paper :)

Nicole, no problem.

Two stories per week would be wonderful, but WW may not want to pay out $1,600 per week and also have to cut something from almost another entire page. My recent story (the elevator one) appeared at the grocery store on the issue date Johnene gave me on the contract. That makes sense, because the dates on the magazines are usually ahead about ten days or so, which would fit with the issue date of Jan. 31 that she put on the contract for my Valentime story.

Upon publication, does Woman's World send the author a courtesy copy of the issue the story is in?

Just curious.....

No, Nicole -- at least I have never received one.

Hi Tamara,

That's kind of sad that they didn't mail you a courtesy copy. I've had a couple of non-fiction publications, and they made sure to send me a copy. I was hoping WW would do the same (of course, I haven't been published with them though to know). Curious to know if anyone else has received a courtesy copy when published with the magazine?

Does anyone know of a reputable website to order a subscription to WW? Couldn't find it on Beauer's website. Was hoping for just a six month subscription since it's kind of expensive, but sure beats having to go get one every week at the supermarket :)

I got the Jan 21st copy of WW on Friday, Jan 11th. It's always on the rack on a Friday in this area.

I did not receive a comp copy. Maybe if you're in the UK where the mag is not for sale the author might get one?

The mag is oversized and uses thin paper. My regular magazines get ripped and crushed in my mailbox. I shudder to think what WW would look like. I just pick it up at the supermarket every Friday. It is cheaper by subscription tho.

Kate, what is the "for sale" date on your contract for your Chinese New Year story?

Many literary journals offer copies of the editions their writers are published in (some in lieu of money, unfortunately).

Jody, you should see a copy of WW on a rainy day. The postman has it in his hand while he crosses the lawn to put it in my mailbox on the front porch. A real rag. I spread it out on the floor to get it dry enough to handle.

I wonder if the Bauer Company kicked my subscription out of their computer listing? I have not received the last two issues and had to buy them at the store.

Anonymous, where are you? Inside the cover of WW it tells you how to subscribe. In the US it is $59.60 for 50 issues (why not 52?), in Canada it is $109.60 in US funds, and "foreign orders" are $134.60 in US funds. Boy oh boy, that postage must be a bear! The subscription address is Woman's World, P.O. Box 422586, Palm Coast, FL 32142-2586. Or log onto www.kable.com/WomanWorld. Or call 800-216-6981. You can't use an 800 number outside the US, can you?

Whew! Maybe you think I didn't need a magnifying glass to get all that!

Happy reading, ladies.

Woman's World doesn't mail courtesy copies. :( The good news is, it's a cheap magazine to buy yourself. If you're a frequent visitor of my blog, you'll already know my number one piece of advice is to SUBSCRIBE and study the stories every week.

In every issue there's a page that has info on how to subscribe. In the Jan. 21 issue it was on the outside edge of page 39, only one column wide. Or it says you can subscribe via kable.com/womansworld

Jody, "on sale date" was Jan 24. :)

Mary Jo said...

Sorry, that's WomansWorld in the web address. A slip of the fingers.

Kate,

So if the 'for sale date' is on Jan 24th ...why were you looking for it this week? Were you looking at the Chinese calendar again?....lol.
