A Halloween Treat

by Lisa Weaver from the October 27, 2025 issue

Tagline: When Sabrina shows up to cater a party at the old Silverpine mansion, she doesn't expect to be greeted by a host with a smile sharp enough to match his costume--or to feel a spark that's anything but scary.

Off the Cuff Observations: Cinnamon-laced pumpkin cupcakes? Yes, please!!

Prediction--R.J. Blackthorne is the mysterious new owner of the haunted mansion.

Who doesn't love a cape? (Maybe Edna Mode from The Incredibles.)

Ryder Joven. Ha! Same initials.

Okay, he's taking a raspberry-filled cupcake, but she was making pumpkin... Okay. I'm a little slow on the uptake here. She's a baker, not a full-on caterer.

Intrigued, Sabrina considered his invitation to partner up in the Halloween festivities. -- Wait, I thought he was inviting her as a guest but I guess I was wrong.

This was a fun, spooky story. I did get a little confused but whatever. I do still think you can't wink dialogue though.

I hadn't thought much of it while I read the first time, but after reading your comments, I am confused, too. It did say she was catering the party but all she brought were cupcakes. And she didn't make raspberry, which is what he ate. Otherwise, it was a good Halloween story. I figured out that he was the author.

Great observations Kate and Sandy. I should have noted somewhere in the story that she made several flavors of cupcakes, and that she was catering a dessert buffet. The tight word count can make it challenging to squeeze all the details in. :)

Yes, the same things caught me. Still a good story though.

Yes, Lisa! We need to convince WW to let us write longer stories again!!! I remember when the word count was 1000 words. Can you imagine the bliss? When we reread our stories, it IS challenging to catch everything!

They were initially 1,500 words. Sometimes I get the feeling they're dwindling away.

I did enjoy your story, Lisa. It is hard to get everything into so few words.

In the "expanded" Thanksgiving and Christmas editions, the word count was also expanded. In the group, one author posted she was asked to add words to her story and another author wasn't. Curious as to why that is and wondering if for other "expanded" editions, if they'll tell authors in advance to write to 1k.

I'd love to see the word count expanded! :) The mystery word count was just reduced, though, so I'm guessing we won't see a bump up in the romance word count anytime soon. I'm grateful Woman's World still publishes fiction. The short story market is dwindling, sadly.
